Established in 1997, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights introduced the OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship. Applications for the 2025 OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship are now being accepted. During the four weeks of the fellowship, which will take place in Geneva, Switzerland in June and July of 2025, you will receive training and learn about the UN system and the procedures that deal with matters pertaining to human rights generally and indigenous concerns specifically. Participants with training are better able to support their communities and organizations.

The five languages offered by this training program are English, Spanish, French, Russian, and Portuguese. The former Indigenous fellows choose the top 15–20 candidates per language group in advance. The fellowship includes a fully financed package that covers living expenses, travel tickets, and essential health insurance. Eligibility Criteria

  • The candidate must be indigenous (non-indigenous persons will not be taken into consideration.
  • Age is not a problem. There is no age limit.
  • Fellows will commit to training other Indigenous community members upon their return.
  • Candidates must be nominated and endorsed by their Indigenous community or organization. The sponsoring entity should have a substantial and representative membership.
