The JIAS Writing Fellowship 2025 is now accepting applications for a fully funded three-month residency program in Johannesburg, South Africa. Organized by the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS) at the University of Johannesburg, this fellowship does not require an application fee. The theme for the 2025 program is “Global Blackness,” focusing on the various experiences, intellectual traditions, and theories related to Blackness across different regions and contexts. The fellowship will take place from April 1 to June 30, 2025, and encourages scholars, practitioners, and leaders to apply. It covers all expenses for participants. Why JIAS Writing Fellowship?

The JIAS Writing Fellowship provides a dedicated space and time for scholars and creatives to delve deeply into experimental research and creative work in the Global South. The fellowship aims to remove the typical academic and professional burdens, such as teaching and administrative tasks. Fellows will focus solely on their work for 3 months in South Africa.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants should hold a PhD qualification.
  • Strong research or creative track record (publications, projects, exhibitions)
  • Preference will be given to the applicants from the Global South region.
  • Preference for women and gender-diverse applicants of color.

  • CV, bio, and headshot
  • Motivation letter: Explain why Johannesburg and JIAS are suitable for your research project (max 250 words)
  • Research project outline: Detail your writing or creative project, including a synopsis, abstract, screenplay, artist’s statement, or project outline (max 1000 words).
